Lafert Group permanent magnet synchronous motors offer efficiency classes IE5 and IE6, combining the advantages of asynchronous and servo technologies.

HP Combi Series / A complete package in which a permanent magnet synchronous motor with IE5 Ultra Premium Efficiency level is matched with a variable frequency drive selected and configured for it. The drive system reaches IES2 efficiency level.

The motor combines the electrical design of brushless servo motors with the mechanical design of asynchronous motors. This increases power density and allows a size and weight reduction of up to 50%.

The drive is supplied separately and mounted close to the motor. This is a decentralised solution - the electrical cabinet is relieved of the drive and of the long cables to the machine, while the short connection reduces electromagnetic compatibility problems.

The drive parameters are preloaded at the factory for the specific motor. The package runs immediately after connection, with no on-site setup and no need to reconcile two separate suppliers.

The series covers variable torque applications (fans, pumps, air conditioning systems) and constant torque applications (conveyors, air and refrigeration compressors, vacuum pumps, material handling).

It is precisely in variable torque applications that speed control delivers more than motor efficiency alone. In fans and centrifugal pumps a small reduction in speed gives a large reduction in power, so at 20% lower speed the power falls to 50%.

The package is available in three configurations according to the requirements of the application:

HP Combi Smart - general purpose configuration for industrial applications, with ready pump and fan modes, power ratings up to 22 kW

HP Combi Flow - configuration for HVAC, with energy saving functions, torque detection, cascade mode and fire mode, power ratings up to 37 kW

HP Combi Plus - configuration for demanding applications, with built in programmable controller, hoist mode and 200% overload, power ratings up to 37 kW

What IES2 means

IES2 is the energy efficiency class of the complete drive system - the motor together with the variable frequency drive - to IEC 61800-9-2. The classes are IES0, IES1 and IES2, where IES2 means losses at least 20% below the reference value.

The IE classes describe the motor only, while IES accounts for the consumption of the system, including the losses in the drive. In variable speed applications it is system efficiency that determines the electricity bill.

In HP Combi the motor is class IE5, the drive is class IE2, and the system as a whole reaches IES2.

Here is what the difference looks like in practice.

A 7.5 kW fan runs 6000 hours per year. With an IE3 asynchronous motor and damper control the motor runs continuously at full speed and consumes around 49 800 kWh.

The same fan with HP Combi, running at 80% speed, requires 3.8 kW at the shaft and consumes around 24 800 kWh.

The difference is close to 25 000 kWh per year with an unchanged duty cycle.
